Itinerary

DAY 1: UMBWE GATE – UMBWE CAVE:

Elevation: 1651m/5417ft to 2944m/9659ft
Altitude gained: 1293m

Leaving Arusha, we drive towards the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, where we'll patiently await the issuance of our permits amidst the bustling activity of crews gearing up for the journey ahead. Revel in the picturesque rainforest scenery and breezy trails as your guide shares insights about the indigenous flora, fauna, and wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail may become muddy and slippery, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended. The path navigates a ridge flanked by two steep valleys, ascending through dense montane forest. Our campsite rests amidst towering trees and dense undergrowth, offering a serene retreat amidst nature's splendor.

DAY 2: UMBWE CAVE – BARRANCO CAMP:

Elevation: 2944m/9659ft to 3986m/13,077ft
Altitude gained: 1042m

Following a restful night's sleep and a satisfying breakfast, we depart from the rainforest and proceed along a steep upward trail, tracing the contours of the Umbwe ridge before descending gently towards Barranco camp nestled in the valley below. As we ascend, temperatures gradually begin to decrease.

DAY 3: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP

Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,235ft
Altitude gained: 48m

Following breakfast, we proceed along a steep ridge, ascending the exhilarating Barranco Wall towards the Karanga Valley and the junction linking with the Mweka Trail. This day offers a remarkable opportunity to witness the remarkable prowess and resilience of your crew as they navigate the wall seemingly effortlessly. We spend the night at Karanga Camp.

DAY 4: KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP:

Elevation: 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft
Altitude gained: 628m

Ascending further towards Barafu Camp, you have now traversed the South Circuit, presenting diverse and awe-inspiring vistas of the summit from various perspectives. Following an early dinner, we rest in readiness for the summit night ahead. Our overnight stay is at Barafu Camp.

DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT:

Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft
Altitude gain: 1233m
Descent to 3106m/10,190ft
Altitude lost: 2789m

Anticipation grows as the morning arrives, marked by an early departure between midnight and 2 a.m. This phase constitutes the most mentally and physically demanding segment of the trek. Proceeding towards the summit amid the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, we strive to maintain warmth and concentration, driven by the remarkable sense of achievement that awaits.

Employing a zigzagging ascent pattern toward Stella Point on the crater rim, we navigate through rugged scree terrain, greeted by a breathtaking sunrise during a brief respite. Speedier hikers may witness this spectacle from the summit. With approximately an hour's climb remaining to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent, expect encounters with snow throughout.

Upon reaching this milestone, we capture photos, revel in celebrations, and perhaps shed tears of joy. Following a brief stop at Barafu for lunch and rest, we embark on a steep descent to Mweka Camp, where we advise the use of gaiters and trekking poles due to challenging terrain. Enjoy a well-deserved rest on your final evening on the mountain. Overnight accommodation awaits at Mweka Camp.

DAY 6: MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE – ARUSHA:

Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft
Altitude lost: 1473m

Following breakfast and a sincere ceremony of gratitude and camaraderie with your crew, it is time to bid farewell. We proceed with the descent towards the Mweka Park Gate to collect your summit certificates. Given the considerably warmer weather and the wet, muddy, and steep terrain, we strongly advise the use of gaiters and trekking poles. Upon reaching the gate, a vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka village to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha.
