Itinerary

DAY 1: LONDROSSI GATE – MTI MKUBWA CAMP:

Elevation: 2389m/7838ft to 2785m/9137ft Altitude gained: 396m

Leaving from Arusha, a scenic four-hour drive will lead you through picturesque mountainside villages to the entrance gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. We will patiently await the issuance of our permits, observing the bustling activities as numerous crews prepare for their upcoming journeys. Amidst the stunning rainforest scenery and winding trails, your guide will provide insights into the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. It's important to note that at these lower elevations, the trail may become muddy and slippery, so we strongly advise the use of gaiters and trekking poles for added stability and safety.

DAY 2: MTI MKUBWA CAMP – SHIRA I CAMP:

Elevation: 2785m/9137ft to 3895m/12,779ft Altitude gained: 1110m

Following a restful night's sleep and a satisfying breakfast, we venture out of the rainforest and proceed along an upward trail. Leaving the forest behind, the path gradually ascends, offering expansive vistas as we approach the rim of the Shira Plateau. As we ascend, temperatures noticeably begin to decrease.

DAY 3: SHIRA 2 CAMP – LAVA TOWER – BARRANCO CAMP:

Elevation: 3895m/12,779ft to 3986m/13,077ft Altitude gained: 91m

Even though you finish the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this day holds significant importance for acclimatization. Moving from the Shira Plateau, we proceed eastward along a ridge, passing by the junction towards the Kibo peak. Continuing southeast towards the Lava Tower, famously known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft), we encounter a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier shortly after. Our journey then descends towards Barranco Camp, where we will spend the night.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP:

Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,253ft Altitude gained: 48m

Following breakfast, we proceed along a steep ridge towards the thrilling Barranco Wall, then onto the Karanga Valley and the junction linking to the Mweka Trail. This day showcases the remarkable power, agility, and strength of your crew as they navigate the wall seemingly effortlessly. We'll spend the night at Karanga Camp.

DAY 5: HIKE KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP:

Elevation: 4034m/13,253ft to 4662m/15,295ft
Altitude gained: 628m

We ascend towards Barafu Camp, marking the completion of the South Circuit and providing diverse, breathtaking views of the summit from various perspectives. Following an early dinner and rest, we prepare for summit night. Our overnight stay will be at Barafu Camp.

DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT:

Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft
Altitude gained: 1233m
Descent to 3090m/10,150ft
Altitude lost: 2789m

Anticipation mounts as the morning arrives, signaling an early start between midnight and 2 a.m., marking the most mentally and physically demanding phase of the trek. Progressing towards the summit amidst the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, we endeavor to stay warm and focused, driven by the incredible sense of accomplishment awaiting us.

Ascending with a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction, we traverse heavy scree terrain towards Stella Point on the crater rim, where a breathtaking sunrise awaits during a brief rest. Swifter hikers may even catch the sunrise from the summit itself. From here, the remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak is likely to be accompanied by snow throughout.

Congratulations are in order as you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent! Following moments of photography, celebrations, and perhaps some tears of joy, we take a brief pause to savor this incredible achievement.

The journey continues with a steep descent to Mweka Camp, with a stop at Barafu for lunch and a short rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended for navigating the challenging terrain of loose gravel and volcanic ash. A well-deserved rest awaits you for your final evening on the mountain at Mweka Camp.

DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE – ARUSHA:

Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft
Altitude lost: 1473m

Following breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to bid farewell. We continue our descent to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. Given the considerably warmer weather, the terrain becomes wet, muddy, and steep, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended. From the gate, a vehicle will await you at Mweka village to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha.
