How many nights in the Serengeti?

One night is a drive-through. Two nights give you a full day on the plains. Three or four nights is the honest stay if the migration is the reason you came, or if you want both a central game-drive day and a second sector (Ndutu in calving months, or the north toward the Mara River in crossing season). Our 4-day circuit uses one Serengeti night; the 6-day uses two; the 7- and 8-day itineraries use three or four.

When to go

You can safari here in any month. December to March often favours the southern plains and Ndutu calving. June to October is dry-season game and, in the north, the Mara River crossings when the herds have moved that far. November showers are usually short. We match sector and lodge class to the dates you actually hold, then send a quote — we do not publish a one-price “Serengeti package” that ignores season.

About the park

Serengeti National Park covers about 14,763 sq km on a high plateau between the Ngorongoro highlands and the Kenya border, extending west toward Lake Victoria. The Maasai name points to the open plains you meet when you enter from the south-east. It was gazetted in 1951 and remains one of the world’s best-known wildlife sanctuaries: short- and long-grass plains in the south and east, acacia savannah in the centre, wooded hills in the north, and the Western Corridor.

Seronera in the centre holds water through the year and is reliable for lions, buffalo, impala, hippo, elephant, cheetah and leopard. From December, when the rains green the southern plains, migratory herds concentrate there. We still treat “the Serengeti” as several parks in one: ask for the sector that matches your month.

Is a 2-night Serengeti stay enough?

It is enough for a first look with a full game-drive day. It is not enough if river crossings or calving are the point of the trip — budget three or four nights in the right sector.

Do you fly or drive in?

Most northern-circuit itineraries drive from Tarangire or Ngorongoro. Fly-in days are quoted when you want more time in camp and less road. Say so on the quote form.
