Tarangire Safari & National Park

Tarangire is the elephant-and-baobab park, and the sensible first night out of Arusha. The river holds wildlife when the rest of the northern circuit looks dry. It is not a mini-Serengeti. It is the right opening chapter: a short drive, a real game drive, and a lodge or camp before you push west toward the crater highlands and the Serengeti.

How many nights?

One night is the Arem default on 3- to 6-day circuits. Two nights make sense in the dry months (June to October) when herds stack along the Tarangire River, or if you want a slower start after a long inbound flight. Three nights is a specialist stay — ask, and we will quote it instead of adding empty Serengeti hours.

When to go

Year-round. Dry months concentrate elephants, buffalo and predators on remaining water. Green months bring birds, fewer vehicles, and a different, wetter landscape. We still use Tarangire as a first or last park because the road from Arusha is honest: you are not spending the whole day transferring.

About the park

Tarangire holds some of the highest wildlife concentrations outside the Serengeti ecosystem, including dry-country antelope such as fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk that you will not count on in Seronera. The landscape shifts hard between wet and dry. During the rains, animals spread into the wider ecosystem. In the dry, the river and remaining pools pull them back in — which is why a July Tarangire night can feel busier with elephants than a green-season day.

Tarangire FAQ

Do I skip Tarangire if I only have four days?

We would not. The 4-day circuit uses it as the first park so Serengeti and Ngorongoro still get a proper night and a crater morning. Skipping it usually means a longer first transfer, not more wildlife.

Are tsetse flies a problem?

They can be in wooded patches. Wear khaki or olive, not black or bright blue, on game-drive days. See the safari packing list.
