Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Ngorongoro is the densest wildlife sitting on a short northern safari: a volcanic caldera, a picnic on the floor, and a real chance of the Big Five in one morning. It is also easy to spoil. A day trip from Arusha makes the descent a race. We sleep on the rim so you go down early, while the crater is still cool.

How many nights?

One rim night is the standard Arem pattern: arrive from the Serengeti (or Karatu), descend at first light, climb out after a picnic, then drive toward Manyara or Arusha. A second rim night is for travellers who want a slower afternoon on the rim or a second, shorter crater window — ask for it on the quote. We do not sell “Ngorongoro only” as a substitute for Serengeti nights.

When the crater is at its best

The floor holds wildlife all year. The dry months (June to October) concentrate animals around remaining water. Green-season months can be beautiful and quieter, with more birds on the soda lake. Heavy rain can close or slow the descent road; we watch NCAA notices before we lock a crater morning to a same-day international flight.

About the conservation area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is more than the caldera. It includes highlands, forests, lakes, open plains, and important archaeological sites. The crater itself is the image most travellers hold: a giant wildlife-filled bowl where lions, hippos, flamingos and, on a good day, black rhino share the floor. Maasai communities continue to live in the wider conservation area under NCAA rules. Crater fees and timing are strict; your Arem guide handles the gate and the descent.

Ngorongoro FAQ

Can I do Ngorongoro as a day trip from Arusha?

You can. We prefer not to. The drive, the gate, and the 600-metre descent leave little wildlife time if you also need to be back for an evening flight.

Is the crater on every Tanzania safari?

It is on our 3- to 8-day northern circuits. Pure Serengeti fly-in trips can skip it if you would rather spend the night on the plains. Say which you want on the quote.
